Eco Natural Commercial Cleaning has been appointed to clean South Australia’s first 8-Star energy efficient and environmentally sustainable display home. The Master Builders Green Living Home was launched on 22 July 2009 by Hon Jennifer Rankine MP, Minister for Housing.
The Master Builders Association (MBA), in conjunction with multi-award winning residential designer and master builder EdenLiving, has constructed the Eco7seven Daintree display home at 101 Bright Place, Blackwood Park in the Adelaide hills.
The charity home will be on display every weekend for 18 months before being auctioned, with proceeds from the sale to benefit the Australian Craniofacial Foundation, a world-class facility caring for and treating patients with head or facial abnormalities.
South Australia's first home to be built to an 8-Star eco standard will set a benchmark for the building industry by showcasing the latest and most innovative products, materials and techniques associated with environmentally sustainable building.
According to the Green Building Council, ‘Buildings have a significant impact on the environment, consuming 32 per cent of the world's resources, including 12 per cent of its water and up to 40 per cent of its energy. Buildings also produce 40 per cent of waste going to landfill and 40 per cent of air emissions. In Australia, commercial buildings produce 8.8 per cent of the national greenhouse emissions and have a major part to play in meeting Australia's international greenhouse obligations.’
Environmental rating tools such as ‘Green Star’ are setting new standards for building projects by evaluating the environmental impact that is a direct consequence of it's site selection, design, construction and building maintenance. A 4-Star rating signifies ‘Best Practice’, 5-Star signifies ‘Australian Excellence’ and a 6-Star rating signifies ‘World Leadership’ yet, increasingly, projects are setting new standards at the level of 7 stars or higher.
From the ground up, the emphasis on the Master Builders’ 8-Star display home has been the environment and carbon sequestration – with more than 40 suppliers of building materials and contractors donating their products and services to build the charity home. Local green cleaning service, Eco Natural Commercial Cleaning has volunteered its support to keep the 8-star display home sparkling clean once it is opened to the public.
‘It seemed only natural that the Master Builders Green Living Home should get the green clean treatment,’ said Eco Natural director Heather Lesley.
‘The cleaning brief is to ensure that everything inside the home continues to look brand new and pristine throughout the 18 months it is on public display,’ she said.
According to Ms. Lesley, ‘Building sites are obviously not the cleanest environments, but it is not necessary to clean a display home with toxic chemicals.’
‘We are proud to be one of the service providers supporting this leading example of green living and sustainable building, and the valuable work of the Craniofacial Foundation.’
‘We believe the future of cleaning is green,’ she said. ‘As more new construction projects are constructed to “Green Star” standards, and existing buildings renovated and retrofitted with energy efficiency and greenhouse emission reduction measures, we believe all building maintenance professionals, including the cleaning industry, have an important role to play in making the transition towards a more sustainable future.’

What made you decide to start up your own natural cleaning business?
The majority of business owners hire a cleaner, yet only a handful of commercial cleaning contractors had adopted earth friendly practices. Eco Natural was created to fill an unmet need in the Adelaide marketplace for a green cleaning service.
How has the cleaning industry changed?
It's changed dramatically! There's an amazing consciousness around the environment. Everyone from small businesses to big corporates are making the transition to green cleaning to complement other sustainable strategies.
What do you love about your job?
The opportunity to work with my husband in a way that is of interest to us both. I love that I have the ability to combine my business and marketing skills while implementing something that's good for the environment and for the health of our customers.

The Green Pages has awarded Eco Natural with a 'Certificate of Green Leadership' for providing a commercial cleaning service that is within the most environmentally sustainable 10% of our market sector. We're proud to be leading the way for the green cleaning industry in Australia.
The majority of Australian businesses hire a cleaner, yet only a handful of commercial cleaning contractors have adopted earth friendly practices. Eco Natural Commercial Cleaning was created to address a need in the Adelaide marketplace for a green cleaning service.
The business idea germinated five years ago when co-founders Heather Lesley and her partner Robert Brough-Smyth were living in the original blacksmith's cottage in an historic conservation area of Second Valley on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Their heritage home (circa 1870) had no mains water and relied on an underground aerobic wastewater treatment system to purify and recycle their household grey water and sewerage onto the garden.
‘You have to be very conscious of what you are putting down your sinks and drains when you depend on a septic system, and you soon learn how precious water is when you turn on the tap and nothing comes out,’ Heather said.
The couple began researching into natural and organic cleaning and personal care products that were compatible with their biocycle system; grey water safe for their garden; and beneficial for the health of their young family.
‘We were surprised to find there were few companies offering ‘green’ cleaning products and services in Australia,’ Heather said. So, with Robert’s background in warehousing and logistics, and a stint working for a commercial cleaning contractor, and Heather's background in marketing, graphic design and account management, they decided to start their own business.
‘Because asthma runs in my family, we are very aware of the importance in reducing asthma and allergy triggers in all the premises we clean. Our goal is to provide a safer, healthier way to clean a building which also reduces waste that ends up in our waterways or in landfill.’
‘We offer a whole of business approach,’ Heather said, ‘not only focusing on commercial cleaning but also helping businesses “go green” as part of their overall business strategy.’
‘We love working with eco-conscious clients who genuinely care about the environment,’ Heather said.
‘One of our clients, Scan Conversion Services, has achieved a “carbon neutral” status by adopting a series of environmentally responsible strategies, including the implementation of a green cleaning, recycling and waste reduction program,’ she said.
‘Scan Conversion Services has been very open to our recommendations for switching to a waterless urinal system, under-desk recycling bins, and “eco-friendly” alternatives to their consumable supplies such as toilet tissue, hand towels, washing-up detergent, liquid hand soap and bin liners.’
‘Green cleaning is not just about chemical substitution,’ Heather said. ‘It is a complete janitorial and recycling program using ecologically responsible cleaning equipment, products and processes to improve indoor air quality, and protect our health, natural resources and the environment.’
